Private Hospital Carries Out First Kidney Transplant in Delta

Mount Horeb Clinic and Dialysis Centre, a private healthcare facility in Warri, Delta State, has made history by successfully performing its first-ever kidney transplant an important milestone for private medical care in Nigeria’s South-South region.

The surgery took place on September 6, 2025, and involved a 31-year-old patient battling chronic kidney disease. Doctors confirmed that the kidney donor was a perfect match, and the transplant went smoothly without any complications. Encouragingly, the patient’s body has responded well and accepted the new kidney.

This groundbreaking procedure makes Mount Horeb the first private hospital in Delta State and nearby areas to carry out a kidney transplant, helping to reduce the need for patients to seek such specialized care in Lagos, Abuja, or overseas.

The successful transplant was carried out by a dedicated medical team, including Dr. Raph Onyemekeihia, Dr. Henry Slater, Dr. Edema Great, Dr. Akporaye Akpomiemie, transplant coordinator Dr. Jimoh Abdulmalik, and nephrology nurse Mrs. Vero Ebinum, working alongside a highly experienced surgeon from India.

Speaking after the successful surgery, Dr. Raph Onyemekeihia said the transplant was the result of years of planning and preparation. He shared that the team had studied kidney transplant procedures in countries like India and Egypt, as well as leading Nigerian hospitals including FMC Umuahia, St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos, and Zenith and St. Caroline Hospitals in Abuja. Since 2018, Mount Horeb had been steadily investing in the necessary infrastructure to make this a reality.

Today, the hospital is equipped with a four-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) fitted with advanced life support systems, and a dual-theatre setup—one for kidney harvesting and the other for the transplant itself—designed to ensure smooth and efficient surgeries.

“Our mission has always been to bring world-class kidney care closer to home,” Dr. Onyemekeihia said. “People in Delta State and surrounding areas no longer have to go through the stress and expense of traveling far for transplants. The care they need is now available right here.”

Mount Horeb Clinic also described the achievement as a step toward supporting Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which emphasizes improved access to quality healthcare for all Deltans.

The management is now calling on the Delta State Government, compassionate individuals, and key players in the healthcare sector to collaborate with the clinic in order to expand its life-saving services.

The successful transplant has been celebrated as a major milestone in Delta State’s healthcare system, opening the door to more advanced medical treatments within the private sector.
