Acclaimed Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, are going through a period of deep sorrow following the death of one of their twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi.
The tragic news was confirmed on Thursday in a statement released on the family’s behalf by Omawumi Ogbe. According to the statement, the couple’s son died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a brief illness. He was just 21 months old.
The family described the loss as heartbreaking and overwhelming, noting that it has left them devastated. In the statement, they appealed for sensitivity and privacy as they mourn their child. “We’re deeply saddened to confirm the passing of one of Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr Ivara Esege’s twin boys, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed on Wednesday, 7th of January 2026, after a brief illness. He was 21 months old,” the statement said.
It further explained that the family has chosen to grieve privately and will not be granting interviews or making additional public statements at this time. They also asked for kindness, prayers, and understanding from the public and the media as they navigate what was described as an incredibly painful and difficult period of profound loss.
