The people of Enenurhie and Enhwe communities in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State have cried out to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori over the collapsed Enenurhie/Enhwe bridge linking the two communities with the East-West Road.
They pleaded passionately with the governor to, as a matter of urgency, come to their aid by fixing the bridge which reportedly caved in on Thursday, November 2, 2023.
Also, they urged the governor to rehabilitate the failed portions of the access road to mitigate the hardship of motorists plying the route.
This was contained in a statement signed by a community leader in the area, Mr. Wilson Macaulay, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri on Sunday.
While pleading with the governor to use his good offices to urgently intervene on their plight, the communities lamented that the economic and social lives of the residents have suffered tremendously due to the collapsed bridge and failed sections of the access road.
“As we speak, vehicular movement has been truncated as motorists can no longer access the East-West Road to go either to Ughelli or Port Harcourt, an experience which has brought a lot of pain and hardship to the people of Enenurhie and Enhwe”, the statement said.
It reads partly, “It is indeed painful to think about the situation we found ourselves. As you can see, the damage is so much, colossal and terrible.
“This bridge is very dear to us because it connects the whole of lsoko communities to the popular East-West Road; so we cannot afford to stay without it, hence the compassionate appeal for the governor to hear our cry and come to our rescue without delay because the situation apparently needs urgent attention without any sentimentality.
“This damage is beyond community effort. The Delta State Government under the leadership of Sheriff Oborevwori should graciously come to our aid to help us out.
“We hope the governor will be compassionate enough to urgently dispatch the Commissioner for Works, Rural and Riverine Areas, Charles Aniagwu, to go and upgrade the collapsed Enenurhie /Enhwe bridge head which serves the general interest of the lsoko people in particular, and the public interest of all Deltans across board.”
