Retired Judge Killed in Asaba: Police Arrest One, Hunt Prime Suspect

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the killing of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, whose body was found in her Asaba home on November 24, 2025.

Authorities say they have begun a full investigation and launched a manhunt for the main suspect, assuring both the family and the public that justice will be done.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer SP Edafe Bright explained that the case was first reported by the judge’s brother. He had gone to her house and discovered her body, bound at the hands, feet, and mouth. He quickly notified the DPO of ‘A’ Division in Asaba, who then deployed officers to the scene.

The judge’s body was removed and taken to the mortuary for an autopsy. Police confirmed that one suspect, Lucky Matthew, is already in custody, while the key suspect, Godwin Vanem believed to be behind the “heinous act” escaped and is still on the run.

Following instructions from the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, the case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for an in-depth investigation. Early findings suggest the fugitive suspect may have committed the murder before fleeing the apartment. CP Abaniwonda offered his condolences to the family and reaffirmed the Command’s determination to ensure that everyone involved faces the law.

The Command also asked anyone with information that could help the investigation or lead to the arrest of the fleeing suspect to reach out through its emergency numbers: 08036684974, 08114895600, and 08025666914.

The Delta Police Command urged residents to remain calm, promising to handle the case with transparency and to work swiftly until justice is fully delivered.
