Rights Group Petitions Police Over Alleged Assault and Forceful Eviction by Landlord and Caretaker

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Oshimili South/North Unit in Delta State, has submitted a petition to the Delta State Commissioner of Police over an alleged case of unlawful assault and forceful eviction of a tenant in Asaba.

The incident reportedly involved the caretaker, Mr. Ebi Paul Osemekeh, and his associates, who allegedly acted on the instruction of the landlord, Mr. Benjamin C. Nwokobia.

In the petition dated October 27, 2025, and signed by the Unit Coordinator, Comrade Orusi Joseph, the group accused Mr. Osemekeh of physically attacking and threatening the tenant, who resides at No. 24, Eze Akporube Street, off Okpanam Road, following a tenancy disagreement.

According to the report, the victim, Comrade Joseph, was allegedly assaulted and denied access to his rented apartment, despite having a valid tenancy agreement.

The CDHR condemned the landlord’s actions, describing them as a clear violation of the tenant’s fundamental human rights to dignity, fair hearing, and property ownership as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.

The rights group also claimed that the caretaker has continued to harass and intimidate the tenant, even though the case is already before Customary Court III in Asaba. The CDHR urged the Delta State Commissioner of Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that everyone involved, including any security operatives who may have assisted in the alleged unlawful eviction, is held accountable.

The group further appealed to the police to guarantee the victim’s safety and to ensure that the suspects respect legal processes instead of taking the law into their own hands through threats and intimidation.

Comrade Joseph reaffirmed the CDHR’s commitment to fighting against oppression, harassment, and abuse of power, stressing the need for urgent action to protect the victim’s rights and prevent the situation from escalating further.

Meanwhile, sources at the Delta State Police Command confirmed that the petition was received and officially acknowledged on October 27, 2025, adding that investigations into the allegations are already underway.
