Security Tension Rises as Ogwashi-Uku Suspects Face Federal Charges

The security situation in Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom saw another major development today, 11 December 2025, as Patrick Izu Osammor and Augustine Nwafor Ashi were formally brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja under Charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/594/2025.

The two men, previously held at Keffi Prison, are accused of involvement in a coordinated plan to destabilise the kingdom.

During the hearing, the court agreed to grant them bail after a strong appeal from their lawyer, Barrister Steve Emelieze, who went as far as offering to submit his Call-to-Bar certificate to guarantee that his clients would not flee. Additional sureties—including the ODA Abuja President, Diokpa Patrick Obi—also pledged to ensure the defendants would attend all court sessions.

However, the defendants were unable to meet the bail conditions. As a result, they were sent to Kuje Correctional Centre. Our correspondent saw correctional officers escorting them back into custody. Their trial has been fixed for 11 March 2025.
The judge cautioned both men to maintain good conduct and refrain from any actions that could disturb public order or obstruct the ongoing investigation, warning that any violation could lead to an immediate withdrawal of bail.

Osammor and Ashi were arrested in October 2025 after months of intelligence operations ordered by the Inspector General of Police.

Investigators claim the duo played key roles in spreading misinformation, incitement, and rallying factions in an effort to destabilise Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom. They are known supporters of the Umu Obi Dieyi group, which lost its challenge to the Ogwashi-Uku throne at the High Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court.

Also present in court were Barr. Victor Nobei and Barr. Francis Okolie, lawyers associated with the faction. Barr. Okolie is currently facing terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Asaba for allegedly taking part in the violent attack on the Obi in October 2023.

Police sources say the inquiry has now expanded to cover new threats made against His Royal Majesty, Obi (Dr.) Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, and to examine possible links between the defendants and suspects already on trial for the 2023 palace attack. Investigators suspect these recent activities may be part of a continued plot.

Attempts by some suspects to use Fundamental Rights applications to stop their arrest have been dismissed by senior police lawyers, who point out that courts cannot prevent law enforcement from investigating criminal activity.

A senior police officer told our reporter: “We will pursue every lead. Anyone involved in attempts to throw Ogwashi-Uku into crisis will face justice. No one is above the law.”

With the trial set for March 2025, many residents are hoping that the proceedings will finally uncover the full network behind the unrest and pave the way for lasting peace in the kingdom.
