Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District, has strongly condemned the violent attack on Miss Edema Jennifer Elohor, a current member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Dafinone called the actions of the armed operatives from Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, “inhuman and barbaric.” He emphasized that the incident was a serious violation of human dignity and a clear attack on the principles of national service and unity.
Recall that a viral video capturing the incident showed the vigilante group storming the corps members’ lodge and descending on them despite their presentation of valid NYSC identification cards. Miss Elohor was reportedly stripped naked, severely beaten, left bleeding, and subjected to humiliating and sexually degrading threats.
Dafinone stated that the attack highlighted the urgent need to regulate vigilante groups nationwide, many of which, he argued, have turned what should be community policing into a tool of violence against innocent people.
He urged the Police to quickly identify, arrest, and bring to justice those behind the “heinous assault,” warning that failing to do so would only encourage more violations of citizens’ rights in the name of security. He also called on the Anambra State Government to take full responsibility by providing compensation to Miss Elohor for the physical, psychological, and emotional harm she endured.
Dafinone also urged the NYSC leadership to make the safety of corps members in Anambra State and throughout the country a top priority, emphasizing that parents and guardians send their children to serve with the hope that they will be protected and treated with respect.
