Senator Prince Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, has assured the people of Ndokwa Nation that their long-standing power issues will soon be resolved. This comes in response to growing calls from residents urging the Federal Government to hand over the Independent Power Project (IPP) in their area.
Senator Nwoko made this promise on Tuesday while speaking to members of the Step Down IPP Ndokwa Nation Movement, who peacefully protested at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. He praised the group for their peaceful approach and reiterated his commitment to ensuring the IPP project truly benefits the local communities as intended.
He also shared that he has held detailed discussions with key government officials, including the Minister of Power, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, and senior leaders of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). Additionally, Senator Nwoko revealed that he has personally spoken with President Bola Tinubu and Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to fast-track the transfer of the IPP to the Ndokwa region.
Senator Nwoko stressed that his efforts in the legislature are focused on fairness, infrastructure justice, and balanced development for the people of Ndokwa, who continue to live without electricity despite providing power to much of the country. He pointed out that the IPP in Ndokwa supplies electricity to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and over eight states, yet the local communities themselves have no access to the power generated from their land.
He also reaffirmed his backing for the creation of Anioma State, seeing it as a way to secure stronger political representation for the Ndokwa people, who would then have their own senator and representatives in the National Assembly.
Earlier, the protesters, led by Dr. Francis Mbabie on behalf of the convener, Comrade Henry Franklyn, voiced their frustration over the Federal Government’s ongoing neglect of Ndokwa Nation, despite its significant contributions to Nigeria’s power sector. They called for immediate action to ensure the IPP is handed over to benefit the host communities.
Dr. Mbabie explained that the movement’s demands are rooted in fairness and justice, stressing that it’s unacceptable for Ndokwa to stay in darkness while its resources provide power to other parts of the country.
The peaceful protest concluded on a positive note, with participants feeling hopeful and confident that their concerns will soon receive meaningful attention from the Federal Government and the relevant authorities.
