The Nigerian Senate has ordered an immediate investigation and repair of the Ujevwu–Itakpe rail corridor after Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) raised concerns about frequent derailments, service disruptions, and mounting safety risks on the vital national route.
Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary, Senator Dafinone described the recurring accidents and poor maintenance of the line as serious threats to passenger safety and the nation’s economic stability. He called for a thorough probe, full rehabilitation, and stronger safety measures to protect lives and preserve the country’s critical transport infrastructure.
The Ujevwu–Itakpe rail line links the South-South through Delta State to the North-Central region and plays a key role in moving passengers, goods, and industrial materials. Dafinone noted that the line’s worsening condition and repeated service breakdowns have made travel difficult for commuters and disrupted supply chains essential to economic growth.
He also urged the Federal Government to extend the rail line from Itakpe to Abuja to ensure complete national rail connectivity, strengthen maintenance systems, and increase the number of trains to meet rising passenger and freight demand.
After discussions, the Senate unanimously approved all the resolutions in the motion, calling for the prompt repair of vandalized rail tracks, a thorough investigation into the state of Nigeria’s railway system, and consideration of the proposed Itakpe–Abuja rail extension.
Senator Dafinone said the motion “underscores our commitment to building a safer, modern, and efficient rail system that supports economic growth and national development.” He emphasized that a dependable rail network is essential to Nigeria’s industrial progress and regional integration.
