Nigeria’s Super Eagles kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tanzania’s Taifa Stars at Fez Stadium today, putting them at the top of Group C.
The win, however, highlighted both Nigeria’s attacking prowess and their struggles with clinical finishing.
The Super Eagles took the lead in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi powerfully headed home a precise cross from midfielder Alex Iwobi. Despite Nigeria’s dominance in possession and creation of chances, the score remained 1-0 at the interval.
Tanzania, however, emerged from the halftime break with renewed determination, finding an equalizer just five minutes into the second half through Charles M’Mohammed Mombwa, momentarily stunning the Nigerian side.
Nigeria’s response was almost immediate and decisive. A mere 108 seconds after the Tanzanian equalizer, Ademola Lookman restored the Super Eagles’ lead with a spectacular left-footed strike from outside the box. Iwobi proved to be the creative engine of the match, providing both assists for Nigeria’s goals.
Despite the victory, the team missed several opportunities to extend their lead, with star striker Victor Osimhen notably threatening but wasteful in front of goal on multiple occasions.
Off the pitch, the match also generated buzz for Afrobeats star Davido, who publicly celebrated a significant win. The musician revealed he had correctly predicted that both teams would score, turning his $25,000 bet into a substantial payout of $96,564.
The Super Eagles will now look to build on this crucial win as they prepare for their upcoming Group C fixtures against Tunisia and Uganda, aiming to secure their place in the next AFCON tournament.
