Flooding has become a recurring nightmare for many Nigerians, causing loss of life, destruction of property, and displacement of communities. The recent floods have highlighted the need for urgent action to mitigate this menace.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), flooding affects millions of Nigerians annually.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) predicts increased flooding due to climate change hence the need for preventive measures must be put in place by all relevant authorities.
There are several factors that can contribute to flooding which include, Climate Change as a result of Increased rainfall’s and rising temperatures exacerbate flooding.
Also, Poor Urban Planning has contributed to Inadequate drainage systems and encroachment on waterways which worsen flood risks. More so, deforestation as to Loss of vegetation increases runoff and reduces water absorption.
Apart of Loss of lives and displacement of communities that occur during Flooding there are also Economic Losses. Flooding damages infrastructure, crops, and property. There are also health risks during the menace because flooding contaminates water sources and increases waterborne diseases.
To combat flooding, government at all levels and the relevant authorities should ensure. Improved Urban Planning by developing sustainable urban plans with effective drainage systems. They should also Invest in flood-resistant construction and infrastructure.
Climate-Resilient Agriculture should also be considered to promote climate-smart agricultural practices. As a matter of urgency, Community Awareness on flood is needed to educate communities on flood risks and preparedness.
Above all government action to address the menace will help to strengthen disaster response and management frameworks.
Notwithstanding, flooding is a national issue that requires collective action from the governments, communities and individuals to address it.
Flooding is a preventable disaster and by working together and implementing effective mitigation strategies, the nation can reduce the risks and build a safer, more resilient Nigeria.
