A passenger train on the Itakpe–Warri rail corridor derailed on Saturday, near Adogo community in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State, leaving scores of passengers stranded for several hours before police and emergency teams intervened.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when several coaches veered off the track mid-journey. No fatalities were reported, but the derailment caused panic among travellers who were forced to disembark and wait by the tracks while security personnel worked to secure the area.
Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that officers from the Ajaokuta Division were immediately deployed to protect the stranded passengers and prevent possible attacks by hoodlums.
He added that all travellers were later evacuated safely with assistance from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and local authorities.
The CP Kogi State Naziru Kankarofi visited the Adogo derailment site on Sunday for on-the-spot assessment. He met with officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and the stranded passengers. He also instructed the deployment of additional security personnel to protect the passengers and facilities.
Preliminary reports suggest that the derailment may have been caused by a track misalignment or mechanical fault, though a formal investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause.
The NRC has not issued an official statement on service suspension, but insiders say operations on the Itakpe–Warri route could experience temporary disruption pending safety assessments and track repairs.
