Ughelli North Council Suspends 2026 Revenue Payments to Committees, Warns Against Double Taxation

The Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area, Hon. Jaro Egbo, has issued a strong public advisory directing residents and business operators not to make any revenue payments for the 2026 fiscal year to any revenue committee, contractor, or consultant at this time.

The directive follows the recent dissolution of all existing revenue committees in the Local Government Area, a move aimed at preventing double taxation and unauthorised revenue collection ahead of the 2026 budget cycle.

Addressing the public in an official statement, signed by Pst. Goodluck I. Unuavworho
Secretary to the Local Government, Ughelli North LGA, the Chairman specifically warned traders, landlords, market operators, business owners, and residents against making payments to any dissolved revenue collection structure until new committees are lawfully constituted.

He assured the public that an official notice will be issued once the 2026 Revenue Committees are duly formed, at which point authorised revenue collection will formally begin under Council supervision.

As part of the transition process, the Chairman further directed that all Chairmen and Secretaries of the dissolved revenue committees must immediately hand over all Local Government properties in their possession.

The items are to be formally transferred to the Treasurer of the Local Government, Mrs. Mercy Morkah, of the Accounts and Finance Department, to ensure accountability and proper asset documentation.

To accommodate residents and business operators who may wish to settle their 2026 revenue obligations in advance, the Council has approved a direct payment channel.

According to the statement, such individuals are advised to:
Visit the Ughelli North Local Government Council Secretariat, and Make payments directly at the Revenue Office Unit, and
Ensure payments are deposited into the official Local Government account.

The Chairman reiterated that, until further notice, no revenue payments should be made to any committee within Ughelli North LGA, stressing that the directive is in the public interest to protect residents from unauthorised collections and ensure orderly revenue management.

The Council emphasised that the notice was issued to safeguard the integrity of Ughelli North’s revenue system as preparations continue for the commencement of official 2026 revenue operations.
