Tension erupted in the Afiesere community of Ughelli, Delta State, after youths reportedly stormed and pulled down a church linked to Pastor Friday Utti, following allegations that he was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a married woman.
Eyewitness accounts circulating online indicate that the incident occurred earlier this week, when groups of young men arrived on motorcycles and forcefully dismantled sections of the church. Videos shared on social media show the attackers tearing off the metal roofing sheets, knocking down pillars, removing chairs and pulling down banners, even as activities were reportedly ongoing within the premises.
Community sources say the action was sparked by a public confession made by a married woman, who alleged that Pastor Utti and other men had been having affairs with her. The situation reportedly escalated after news spread that the woman died last week following a brief illness, although the exact cause of her death has not been officially confirmed.
In a testimony circulating widely on social media, Mr. Anthony Egbe, an indigene of Afiesere, claimed the deceased was his wife. He alleged that she became ill and later died after her involvement with the pastor, adding that some community members believe her death was linked to traditional Urhobo ancestral justice. These claims, however, remain unverified and are based on local beliefs rather than any medical or legal findings.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies and Delta State authorities have not issued any official statement on the demolition of the church or the allegations against the pastor. It is also unclear whether any arrests have been made or if an investigation has been formally opened.
Residents say calm has since returned to the area, but the incident has continued to generate intense debate both within the community and across social media platforms.
