Ukwuani Leaders, Security Agencies Agree on Peace Pact to Resolve Growing Communal Land Disputes

An expanded peace-building meeting with key stakeholders from Ukwuani Local Government Area in Delta State has agreed to put a stop to the ongoing communal land disputes threatening peace in the community.

The group unanimously called for unity, mutual respect, and strict adherence to legal processes.

The meeting, which was held, at the Chairman’s Conference Hall in Obiaruku, was attended by key figures including the Executive Chairman and Chief Security Officer of the Council, the Vice Chairman, the Secretary to the Local Government, traditional rulers, clan heads, presidents-general, youth representatives, and officials from the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS, NSCDC, NDLEA, CAN, vigilante groups, and other important stakeholders.

At the conclusion of the lively discussions, the stakeholders released a communiqué stating that all nine clans in Ukwuani LGA, as outlined in the official government gazette, will be fully recognized and respected. They also agreed that each clan will continue to function independently within the boundaries of the law.

The meeting warned against making inflammatory statements in the media and urged communities to avoid giving press interviews or making public comments on sensitive issues. It also instructed paramount traditional rulers to lead responsibly within their areas and cautioned against any actions that could threaten peace and unity.

Regarding the ongoing dispute over the alleged installation of the Onotu-Uku of Umuebu in Obiaruku Clan, the meeting decided that all related actions should stop immediately until the case is resolved by a competent court or through a potential out-of-court settlement arranged by the council.

The Council committed to overseeing the implementation of the resolutions and working closely with security agencies to ensure enforcement when needed. Stakeholders also reaffirmed their dedication to upholding the rule of law in addressing disputes and grievances, emphasizing that only legal methods would be accepted moving forward.

The communiqué, signed by Mr. Osondu Chukunomnazu, the Secretary to the Local Government, on behalf of the Executive Chairman, stated that the resolutions are binding on all parties effective immediately, until any further legal instructions or court rulings are made.
