Elders and pioneer members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State have strongly condemned the recent wave of defection by some party stalwarts, describing the move as a betrayal of the party’s values, legacy, and structure built over the decades.
The condemnation came during a crucial meeting held in Obiaruku, which brought together founding fathers and party leaders from all ten wards in the Local Government Area of Delta State.
The meeting was convened to reaffirm their collective loyalty to the PDP and to assure supporters that the party remains resilient and fully active in Ukwuani, despite the recent political distractions.
Speaking during the meeting, the former councillor from Umusume, Mr. Ikechukwu, revealed that the session was convened to regroup loyal members and chart a path forward. He said each ward has been directed to hold internal consultations, after which a larger, more inclusive meeting would be convened.
Similarly, a former supervisory councillor from Ward 3, Ebedie, Mr. Emeshiri, stated emphatically that he would not be part of a movement “without direction or clear purpose,” stressing his continued allegiance to the PDP.
The elders expressed concern that political opportunists were trying to destabilize the party for selfish interests. However, they insisted that while defections may dominate media headlines, they do not reflect the true state of grassroots support.
The meeting concluded with a firm call for unity and commitment to the party’s ideals. The leaders pledged to intensify grassroots mobilization, ensure the party’s sustained relevance, and defend Delta State’s political heritage against any threat from within or outside.
