Umueziogoli Community Restores Power After Two Decades as PowerGas Commissions 500KVA Transformer

After more than 20 years without electricity, the Umueziogoli Community in Ebedei, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, can finally celebrate the restoration of power, thanks to PowerGas Ebedei Limited (PEL), which has completed and commissioned a 500KVA transformer project for the community.

The electrification project, which began in 2024, was officially completed and commissioned on Thursday, featuring the installation of a 500KVA transformer, a high-voltage link to the 33KV federal grid, and low-voltage distribution lines. The project was donated by PowerGas Ebedei Limited and coordinated by the PowerGas Ebedei Management Committee (PGMC) in collaboration with contractor Jeno Nigeria Electrical.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of PowerGas Ebedei Limited, Mrs. Lanre Odusote, represented by the Plant Manager, Engineer Mike Okolo, described the achievement as a major milestone for both the company and its host community.

“Electricity is the heartbeat of any community it powers homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. It drives growth, improves living standards, and fosters development,” she said. “This project reflects our dedication to a brighter future for all and aligns with our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in expanding access to energy.”

Mrs. Odusote reaffirmed PowerGas’s commitment to sustainable community development under its General Memorandum of Understanding (GMOU) with host communities. She commended the cooperation of the Umueziogoli people and encouraged continued partnership to ensure the long-term success of the company’s operations.

Representing the Chairman of Ukwani Local Government Area, Barr. Ajede Possible, the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Nomnazu Osondu, praised PowerGas for its social investment efforts, describing the initiative as a shining example of public-private partnership.

“This is a powerful example of what collaboration between the private sector and communities can achieve,” he said. “Through this project, PowerGas has rewritten the story of infrastructural neglect and set Umueziogoli on the path to real socio-economic transformation.”

He also urged other corporate organizations operating in Delta State to take a cue from PowerGas by investing in projects that promote rural development and improve community livelihoods.

In his remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of Jeno Nigeria Electrical, Engineer Emmanuel Jibunoh, whose company handled the execution of the project, praised both PowerGas and the Umueziogoli community for their cooperation and commitment throughout the process.

“Despite a few challenges along the way, everyone worked together to see it through. The transformer has been running smoothly for the past two months, providing steady power to residents. I sincerely hope it continues to do so for many years,” Jibunoh said.

Speaking with The Pointer, the Onu-Eze of Umueziogoli, Chief Felix Ojugbeli, expressed heartfelt appreciation to PowerGas for what he described as a life-changing intervention.

“For over twenty years, we lived in darkness,” he recounted. “When PowerGas came, we had faith that things would improve and they did. The company has not only provided light but also employed our youths and kept its promises under the MOU. We are truly grateful.”
