Urhobo College, Uvwie, Warri, clinched the title at the 2025 Delta State/Zenith Bank Principals’ Cup after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Ogbe-Ijoh Grammar School, Warri South West, in the final held on Thursday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba,
The Uvwie side opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the match and doubled their lead in the 30th minute. Ogbe-Ijoh Grammar School managed to pull one back midway through the second half, but Urhobo College held their ground despite late pressure to secure the prestigious trophy.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by his Deputy, John Onyeme, congratulated all participating schools for their outstanding displays, noting that every team deserved to be called a champion.
He also expressed appreciation to Zenith Bank and the event’s organisers, HideaPlus Limited, for their unwavering support and investment in grassroots football development across the state.
Also addressing the event, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, noted that the tournament’s success highlights Delta State’s prominent position in promoting grassroots football across Nigeria.
Speaking on behalf of Zenith Bank, Managing Director Dr. Adaora Umeoji, represented by Zonal Head Dr. Ifeanyi Atamah, expressed pride in the bank’s support for youth development through sports, noting that many former participants have gone on to pursue professional football careers.
The organisers, led by HideaPlus Managing Director Tony Pemu, expressed their satisfaction with how smoothly the tournament was conducted. Coach Adamu Ali and the team captain of Urhobo College celebrated the win, promising to return even stronger next year.
In the Third-Place match, Otokutu Grammar School, Ughelli South, was narrowly defeated 1-0 by Justice Peace and Success Academy, Aniocha South.
As champions, Urhobo College received an 18-seater Hummer bus and N2 million, while runners-up Ogbe-Ijoh Grammar School were awarded N1.5 million. The third and fourth-placed teams earned N1 million and N500,000, respectively.
With this triumph, Urhobo College has etched its name in Delta State football history as the 2025 Principals’ Cup champions.
