Urhobo College, Uvwie, has earned a place in the final of the Delta State Principals’ Cup following a boardroom decision, and the team is determined to make the most of the opportunity.
The tournament final, sponsored by Zenith Bank Plc in partnership with the Delta State Government, is scheduled for Thursday, November 6, at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
Urhobo College initially lost 3-0 to Otokutu Grammar School in the semifinal held at Government College, Ughelli. However, after a formal protest by the Uvwie Local Government Area champions over the use of ineligible players by Otokutu, Urhobo College was awarded the spot in the final.
Under the guidance of Coach Fred Oteri, the team is now fully prepared for Thursday’s showdown. Sources in Asaba revealed that the squad has been training at Kenwood Hotels and Suites, Effurun, thanks to the support of Urhobo College alumnus and philanthropist, Chief Idama Amurun, sponsor of the Sheriff Oborevwori U-17 Unity Cup.
“The team has been playing a series of friendly matches to ensure they are in peak condition, with full backing from the old students’ association,” a source in the state capital shared.
In the final, Urhobo College will face Warri South West LGA champions, Ogbeijoh Grammar School, Ogbeijoh.
Meanwhile, Delta FA Chairman, Chief Ken Nwanmocha, praised the Zenith Bank/Delta Principals’ Cup organizers, Hideaplus Limited, for their decision to disqualify a school that fielded an ineligible player. He said the move was crucial for maintaining the tournament’s standards and integrity and would serve as a warning to other schools in the future.
“It’s important to uphold the integrity of the competition. We are ready for the final and hope the Governor will join us to celebrate the football stars of tomorrow,” Nwanmocha added.
