VCDF, SEEPCO Launch Free Eye Care Programme in Delta

In Delta State alone, about 50,000 people are estimated to suffer from cataracts a condition that can be successfully treated if detected early. Unfortunately, limited access to specialist eye care and the high cost of treatment means that many people, particularly in rural areas, are left without the help they need.

To address this growing health issue, VCare for Development Foundation (VCDF), supported by Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company (SEEPCO), has launched its Sustainable Primary Eye Care Services (SPECTS) program in Ashaka, located in Ndokwa East Local Government Area.

The program provides free eye exams, cataract surgery, medications and prescription eyeglasses, bringing essential eye care directly to underserved communities.

At the launch event in Ashaka, VCDF Program Manager Mr Philip Ukemezia explained that the initiative is part of a comprehensive, long-term plan to improve eye care services across the state. He disclosed that the Foundation has signed a 10-year MoU with the Delta State Government to enhance access to quality and sustainable eye health services. Ukemezia noted that the partnership working with the Delta State Ministry of Health and supported by SEEPCO focuses on early detection and timely treatment of common eye conditions such as cataract and pterygium.

By incorporating eye care into existing primary health care centres, the program aims to ease access to services, especially for residents who rely on these centers as the first point of care. The SPECS program, launched in 2023, emphasizes early screening,

Also speaking at the event, the Vice Chairman of Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Mrs. Cecilia Ekpo, praised the foundation and its partners, describing the programme as a welcome relief for residents. She highlighted that many individuals who previously could not afford treatment can now access care at no cost, significantly improving their quality of life.
