In a scintillating clash at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, NWFL champions Delta Queens displayed remarkable resilience to overcome Ivorian opponents Athletico with a 3-2 victory. This triumph propels them into the final of the WAFU B Zone Qualifier, a pivotal step towards the coveted CAF Women’s Champions League.

The encounter began with an unexpected twist as Athletico seized an early advantage, stunning the Delta Queens by slotting in a goal just five minutes into the match.

Melissa Behinan’s swift strike served as a wake-up call for the Nigerian side, who then tirelessly pursued an equalizer.

Persistence paid off in the 63rd minute, with Mercy Omokwo stepping up to restore parity and breathe new life into the contest.

As neither team managed to break the deadlock within regulation time, the thrilling semifinal encounter progressed into extra-time. Once again, Omokwo emerged as a pivotal figure, elevating her team’s prospects.

Her timely goal netted a mere eight minutes into the extra period, and propelled the Delta Queens into the lead for the first time, setting the stage for a dramatic finale.

The resolve of the Delta Queens was further underlined when Falconets midfielder and team captain Taiwo Afolabi etched her name into the scoresheet, seizing the opportunity to score in the opening minute of the second period of extra time.

This pivotal contribution effectively widened the gap between the sides and placed the match firmly out of the Ivorians’ grasp.

Amidst the heightened tension, Joy Sunday managed to pull one back for Athletico, finding the back of the net in the 114th minute. However, Delta Queens exhibited remarkable resilience, maintaining their lead and securing a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

With this triumphant result, the Nigerian champions earned their place in the final, where they are slated to face Ampem Darkoa Ladies, a formidable Ghanaian side.

This showdown will determine the representative from WAFU Zone B for the CAF Women’s Champions League—a monumental opportunity that underscores the significance of Delta Queens’ captivating journey through the WAFU B Zone Qualifier.
