Delta State Commissioner for Works Cracks down on Illegal Speed Breaker

The Delta State Government has declared total war on unauthorised speed breakers littering public roads, describing them as major threats to infrastructure integrity, road safety, and smooth vehicular movement across the state.

Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, dropped the bombshell during an on-the-spot assessment of ongoing road rehabilitation works in Ughelli South and Udu Local Government Areas.

Comrade Izeze lambasted the indiscriminate and haphazard erection of these structures, insisting that all traffic-calming measures must conform strictly to approved engineering designs and secure explicit approval from the ministry beforehand.

“These illegal speed breakers are damaging freshly rehabilitated roads, unnecessarily extending travel times, and endangering the lives of motorists and pedestrians alike, especially at night or during high-speed driving,” the commissioner fumed.

He warned that the ministry would no longer tolerate such violations, announcing plans for an imminent statewide sensitization blitz in collaboration with government-owned media platforms to enlighten residents, communities, and contractors on the associated hazards and existing regulations.

“Any unauthorised speed breaker spotted will be demolished without delay. Contractors caught installing them illegally will be forced to remove the structures at their own cost and face appropriate sanctions,” Izeze declared emphatically.

The tough stance aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which prioritises durable, high-quality, and citizen-focused road infrastructure delivery.

The commissioner assured that all current projects remain under rigorous supervision to guarantee adherence to safety protocols, longevity, and optimal value for taxpayers’ money.

In a related development during the inspection tour, Izeze visited the Southern Delta University (SDU), Ozoro, where he joined other top officials in hailing the institution as a prime model of functional and practical-oriented education under the Oborevwori administration.

The visit underscored the government’s broader push for quality infrastructure and impactful development across sectors.
