Warri-Itakpe: Passengers react as train service resumes

Passengers have continued to react to resumption of commercial train service as management of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) commenced operations last week.

The management had announced that the Warri-Itakpe passenger train suspended due to multiple engine failures will resume operations last Wednesday.

A resident at Agbor in Delta state, Mr. Augustine Okuashaka said the resumption of train service was long overdue noting that it took management of the corporation over two weeks to fix engine failure.

He advised that the management should have back-up locomotive engines that could be deployed whenever there is engine failure so that passengers will not lose faith in the consistency of service.

He noted that since the announcement of the suspension of service, passengers most of whom are traders opted for alternative modes in order to meet the demand of their customers.

Another commuter simply identified as Mrs Cecilia recalled her experience during the multiple engine failure saying, the idea of operating passenger trains without provision of backup in the event of engine failure is not acceptable.

She said the train broke down at night in a bush and passengers had no option than to sleep inside the coaches till dawn at the risk of their lives.

The management in a statement signed by Acting Deputy Director, Public Relations, Calistus Unyimadu said the engineers worked diligently to rectify the fault and improve operational and efficient service delivery.

He apologised to passengers, stakeholders and the general public for the disruption of Service since April 10, 2025 adding that the service will operate six days a week – Monday to Wednesday and Friday to Sunday while Thursday will be reserved for maintenance of track and rolling stock.
