Warri South Chairman plans to construct island within LGA

The Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area in Delta State, Comr. Weyinmi Isaac Agbateyiniro, has announced plans for his administration to construct an island within Warri South, modeled after Banana Island in Lagos.

The project, aimed to be a public-private partnership, was unveiled during a media event marking the first 100 days of his administration.

Agbateyiniro stated, “We will be replicating what we have as Banana Island in Lagos here in Warri South. A lot of people have said it is not possible. Let them say that while we stay on the side of possibility. We will propose the relevant Bill to the Legislative Arm and pass a bylaw to that effect.”

In addition to this ambitious project, the chairman highlighted the creation of an investment committee and the Warri South Local Government Area Investment Project and Development Board, which will foster a conducive environment for investors.

He emphasized various human capital, infrastructure, and environmental sanitation projects initiated in his first 100 days in office, including a plan for farm estates in riverine areas and sending agricultural leaders for specialized training.

For security, Agbateyiniro mentioned plans to require all hotels in Warri South to install CCTV cameras. “The first week of November, we will launch Operation Keep Warri South Clean,” he announced, stressing that public service trust management was key to his administration’s goals. He thanked local party leaders for their support in achieving this.

As part of the drive for urban improvement, Agbateyiniro pledged to clear canals and enhance water channels, declaring, “We cannot continue to live like animals,” while outlining his vision to create a “local version of Banana Island” to attract investment and create jobs.

Security was also prioritized, with initiatives to profile and train vigilante groups in the area. He further expressed concerns over policing practices that negatively impact nightlife in Warri, promising a town hall meeting to address public safety issues.

Revenue generation was another focal point. The chairman highlighted inefficiencies causing financial losses and advocated for electronic revenue collection to reduce human interference and enhance accountability.

In agriculture, Agbateyiniro shared plans to establish a farm village where produce would be sold at subsidized rates to residents, revealing ongoing negotiations with community leaders regarding the farm’s management.

Community engagement was emphasized as a key element for the success of development projects, with a call for collaboration with local businesses and stakeholders. He encouraged corporate social responsibility, urging banks and businesses to contribute to local infrastructure development.

The Vice Chairman of Warri South, Hon. Kingsley Edafiejebra, expressed appreciation for the chairman’s leadership, reinforcing the council’s commitment to community outreach.

He listed projects like road reconstruction and market revitalization, and assured traders of available soft loans to support their businesses.

Council Supervisors shared updates on their sectors. Supervisor for Environment, Mr. Femi Okorodiden, reported successful management of water hyacinth infestations across local canals. “Since we assumed office, the council has cleared nearly all infestations, marking significant progress in environmental conditions,” he said.

Supervisor for Human Capital Development, Misan Eke, spoke on the Sheriff Care Program, which has empowered over 400 widows. “The program includes the registration of 29 local markets, each set to receive 10 million naira,” she added.

In conclusion, Chairman Agbateyiniro’s ceremony emphasized governance focused on public welfare, transparency, and community involvement as he works toward transforming Warri South into a more habitable and prosperous area.
