It was a frustrating afternoon for football fans at the Delta State Polytechnic Stadium on Sunday, as regional rivals Warri Wolves and Bendel Insurance canceled each other out in a tense, scoreless draw.
The Matchday 31 encounter, which many hoped would be a goal-fest, instead turned into a tactical chess match. Both the “Seasiders” and the “Benin Arsenals” prioritized a “safety first” approach, leaving the Ozoro crowd waiting for a breakthrough that never came.
Warri Wolves started the match with plenty of intent, looking to erase the memory of their narrow defeat to Bayelsa United last time out. The home side saw a lot of the ball in the opening thirty minutes, but they struggled to find that final “killer pass” to truly test the Insurance goalkeeper.
The second half saw Bendel Insurance grow in confidence. The visitors nearly snatched the lead around the 60-minute mark with a sweeping counter-attack that forced a brilliant point-blank save from the Wolves’ shot-stopper. A goalmouth scramble followed, but the Wolves’ backline showed incredible discipline to hack the ball clear.
While a clean sheet is always a positive, the mood in the Warri Wolves camp was one of missed opportunity. A club official, speaking shortly after the final whistle, didn’t hide the feeling of “what could have been.”
“Look, it was a typical derby—intense, physical, and very tactical,” the source noted. “We’re happy with the discipline the boys showed, especially after the scare in the second half. But at home, you want all three points. We created the pressure, but we just weren’t sharp enough in the final third today.”
The result keeps Warri Wolves in the middle of the NPFL pack, currently sitting around 10th place with 40 points. While they aren’t in immediate danger, they’ll need to find their scoring boots soon to ensure they don’t slide back toward the relegation scrap.
For Bendel Insurance, the away point is a solid result that keeps them firmly in the hunt for a top-six finish, moving them to approximately 45 points.
