An unidentified woman has allegedly jumped from the Ekpan flyover in Uvwie local government area, Delta state to her death.
The sad incident which occurred Saturday afternoon became the first alleged case of suicide recorded on the flyover.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe confirmed the sad incident, saying before the police got there the corpse of the lady had been removed.
“We heard of the incident but before our men got there, they took the corpse of the woman away.”, the police said.
Some eyewitnesses said the middle-aged lady apparently in her 30s screamed that she was tired of hardship before jumping from the flyover to her death.
In a one-minute, 14-second viral video on social media, passersby were seen armed with their smartphones, waiting for her to take the backward plunge to death.
On the flyover were also motorcycles and other vehicles passing, and occupants watched as she inched towards the edge of the flyover and took the plunge.
In a terse post accompanying the video, someone wrote:
“She killed herself by jumping off the flyover that leads to the refinery at Ekpan, a spot that has been quite familiar to me for decades now.
“Depression is real, and we would do well to regularly check on our loved ones, neighbours, friends, and colleagues, especially in these trying times.
“Depression is a disease that is actually treatable, and we must never, ever succumb to it.
“No matter what is happening, it is only temporary. Where there’s life, there is also hope, and that is one of the great mysteries of life.May her soul rest with Our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Another user posted:
“Gruesome Scene! For those who still think the present economic hardship in the terrorist state called Nigeria is a joke.
“This woman is a mother of 3 committed suicide this morning 29th June 2024 at Ekpan shaguolo bridge in warri Delta state. She said she is tired of begging and facing insults plus rejection to feed herself and 3 children and all effort to even get a manual job has been fruitless as nobody is hiring and that people even call her lazy without knowing how much is struggling.
“A confession made to her neighbour last night.”
After landing on the tarred road, those standing by were heard in the video lamenting her tragic action.
