Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface’s claim that some members of Nigeria’s senior national team show a lack of dedication in their matches has sparked discontent among many of his fellow players.
In a recent interview, Boniface voiced his worries about the attitude of certain players while representing the national team, suggesting that they seem unconcerned about the game’s outcomes.
“Some of my teammates approach the national team with the mentality that we play, and whether we win or lose doesn’t matter,” Boniface stated during The Culture League podcast.
“I consistently remind them that we are representing millions in Nigeria. I believe Africa has the largest population.”
A senior player from the team responded to his statements, calling Boniface’s comments unfortunate, especially during a time when the team is encountering difficulties in the World Cup qualifiers and adapting to a new coach.
“We became aware of his remarks just a few days ago. It is inappropriate to discuss teammates in this way, but since he did not name anyone specifically, I will not mention mine; however, I will share my thoughts on his character,” he remarked.

“During the AFCON qualifiers match against Rwanda in Uyo, a senior player nearly confronted Boniface at halftime over his perceived lack of effort. Other players can attest to what occurred before the second half.
In Russia, he was substituted at halftime and declared he was leaving the team, only to later revoke that statement. If anyone demonstrates a lack of dedication and indifference, it is Boniface, who frequently retreats to the locker room or social media after a defeat.
“I remember several occasions while Austine Eguavoen was interim coach where he expressed disappointment with Boniface’s commitment when representing the Super Eagles. He was likely projecting his own conduct rather than commenting on any other player,” he concluded.
