The annual Zenith Bank/Delta State Headmasters’ Cup football competition starts today in Asaba.

The catch them young tournament sponsored by Zenith Bank Plc is organised for primary school pupils in Delta State.

Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank Ebenezer Onyeagwu said the organisation was always committed to youth development.

“The Delta State Headmasters’ Cup is one of the events we deliberately designed to develop talents from the grassroots. We want to give them the opportunity to attain their potential with their talents,” Onyeagwu said.


Commissioner for Primary Education in Delta State, Chief Sunday Onoriode, said on Wednesday that all arrangements have been made to stage a good tournament.

Today’s kick-off slated for St Patrick’s college. Asaba is between Abu-Ato Primary School 1 Asaba and Ezemese Primary School, Ibusa. The match starts at 11 am.

Delta Ministry of Sport PRO Magnus Emuji said the zonal preliminaries would start on Monday in various centres.

Annual Delta State Headmasters’ Cup competition will be another avenue to unearth young budding soccer talents

Few months ago, at a press briefing heralding the event, the Commissioner stated the competition will simultaneously fulfill the exercise needs of the children.


According to him, the 4th edition tagged ‘2023 Zenith Bank/Delta Headmasters’ Cup’ was designed to foster the love for sports in the children at a young age as it has shown fruitful results in the past and promises to continue to be pivotal in the development of grassroots sports both in the state and beyond.


“This edition of the competition promises to be an improvement on the past editions as we strive to make the competition more inclusive with participation by public and private primary schools in Delta. The preliminary stage of the competition will run simultaneously across the 25 LGAs of the state.”


“The outcome has been made possible through the commitments of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and other stakeholders both in the public and private sectors. I also appreciate our sponsors, Zenith Bank PLC, for their continued support and benevolence in sponsoring the competition. This endeavor is worthy of emulation as the bank remains a trustworthy partner in the grassroots sports development industry,” Onoriode stated.
