Delta Assembly Clerk celebrates appointment with thanksgiving service

Dignitaries from across Delta State and beyond converged at St Brigid’s Catholic Church, Asaba, on Sunday, to celebrate the appointment of Barrister Aghoghophia Otto as the substantive Clerk of the Delta State House of Assembly.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led the executive arm of the government to the thanksgiving service, accompanied by Civil Commissioners, Special Advisers, Chief of Staff Prince Johnson Erijo, Head of Service Reginald Bayoko, and Principal Secretary to the Governor Mrs Lyna Ocholor, among others.

The legislative arm was equally well-represented, with the Speaker,  Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor heading a delegation that included Deputy Speaker Rt Hon Arthur Akpowowo and Majority Leader Hon Emeka Nwaobi.

Parishioners, top government officials, relatives, friends, and colleagues also attended to honour Barr Otto’s remarkable career milestone.

In his remarks, Barr Otto expressed gratitude to God, describing his elevation from Acting Clerk to substantive Clerk as an act of divine intervention. He acknowledged the instrumental roles of individuals who influenced his career trajectory, particularly Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, whose mentorship during his tenure as Speaker of the Assembly greatly shaped his professional growth.

Otto also commended the incumbent Speaker, Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor, for his exceptional leadership and for facilitating this new chapter in his career. Reflecting on his journey, the Clerk pledged unwavering dedication to God and humanity, vowing to remain steadfast in his service.

Delivering the homily, Revd Fr Israel Dibia emphasised the importance of resilience and faith amid life’s trials. Titled “Look to the Future with Hope,” his sermon urged Christians to trust in God’s timing and promises, noting that every hardship would eventually give way to liberation and blessings.

“Despite the challenges, there is hope for Delta, and there is hope for Nigeria. God’s time is perfect, and we celebrate today a man of faith and perseverance, Mr Aghoghophia Otto,” Fr Dibia stated.

Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor described Otto as a diligent and committed professional whose contributions to the legislature have been invaluable. He encouraged Otto to sustain his exemplary work ethic and the reputation he has built over the years.

Similarly, Mrs Lyna Ocholor, Principal Secretary to the Governor and former Clerk of the Assembly, congratulated Otto on his appointment and prayed for divine wisdom to guide him in his new role.

The thanksgiving service, officiated by sixteen Catholic priests, culminated in special prayers for Otto and his family, seeking God’s continued protection and blessings. A reception followed, bringing together Assembly members, staff, friends, and well-wishers to celebrate the new Clerk’s achievement.

It is noteworthy that Barr Otto’s appointment as substantive Clerk was formalised on 8 October 2024, following a motion moved by the House Leader, Hon Emeka Nwaobi, and unanimously adopted by the Assembly.
