Former students of the Class of ’77 from the College of Commerce, Warri, together with HRM Dr. Richard Oghenevwogaga Ebelle, the Ovie of Agbarha–Otor Kingdom in Ughelli North LGA of Delta State, donated books worth several millions of naira to Southern Delta University, Ozoro, Oreorokpe Campus, on Monday.
Speaking on behalf of the donors, Chief David Ejukonemu explained in his keynote address that the donation was aimed at supporting education and complementing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s efforts to improve learning across Delta State.
He revealed that the books, called “Books for Africa,” were sourced from the United States. Chief Ejukonemu also assured the university that more donations would come in the future, urging the institution to put the books to good use.
The Provost of the campus, Professor Akpovughaye Taiga, expressed profound appreciation on behalf of Southern Delta University. He emphasized that books are more than printed pages—they are vessels of knowledge, inspiration, and discovery. He added that they help shape minds, strengthen academic excellence, and open new worlds. According to him, the donation is not just an act of generosity but an investment in the intellectual growth of students, staff, and researchers. He also assured the donors that the books would be carefully used and valued.
Professor Akpovughaye further mentioned that some donors are alumni of the University of Ibadan.
At a brief reception in the Provost’s office, the Duke of Oreorokpe, Prince Godwin Ejiyeren, who represented HRM Major General Felix Mudjakperuo (rtd), the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, also commended the donors. He equally praised Governor Oborevwori for establishing the campus and for the remarkable progress recorded across various sectors in the state.
The Deputy Dean of Students, Dr. James Ighorodje, told our correspondent that the donation came at a crucial time and noted that the Class of ’77 group was the first to make such a significant contribution to the campus.
The campus Librarian, Dr. Chukwuma Emeri, also described the books as highly relevant and assured that they would be put to effective use.
Other members of the visiting group included Mr. Matthew Olomu, Proprietor of Riser Schools, Effurun, and Mr. Richard Ederi.
