Anambra Reclaims 10 Oil Wells from Delta

The Anambra State Government has announced that it has successfully reclaimed about 10 oil wells located around the Anambra River Basin that rightfully belong to the state but were previously allocated to Delta State.

This was disclosed on Thursday in Awka by Charles Ofoegbu, the Managing Director of the Anambra State Solid Mineral Development Company and Chairman of Anambra State Petroleum Energy Resources Limited, during a briefing with journalists.

Anambra was officially recognised as one of Nigeria’s oil-producing states in 2025, beginning with a production capacity of about 3,000 barrels of oil per day.

Ofoegbu explained that the oil wells have long been at the centre of boundary disputes between Anambra and neighbouring Delta State. He added that once the report from a verification exercise carried out by the Revenue Mobilisation Commission is approved, Anambra will begin receiving additional revenue from the wells situated along its maritime boundary with Delta.

He also revealed that the state government is collaborating with foreign investors to establish a modular refinery in Ossamala, located in Ogbaru Local Government Area. The refinery is expected to produce petroleum products and diesel for Anambra and nearby states, creating significant revenue for the state.

According to him, the government is also working to reclaim several other oil wells currently attributed to Imo, Delta, Rivers, and Enugu states due to unresolved boundary issues. Recovering these wells would increase from the Federal Government. He noted that around 10 wells previously assigned to Delta State have already been recovered.

Beyond oil, Ofoegbu said the state is expanding activities in the solid minerals sector. An agency is currently developing a kaolin mining site in Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area, which is expected to generate additional income for the state.

He added that plans are underway to establish a bentonite processing plant at Achalagu in Nteje, while the raw materials will be sourced from Umuchu and Ufuma. Bentonite, widely used in the oil industry, is also expected to boost the state’s revenue.

Ofoegbu further stated that income from the oil sector has significantly supported the achievements of the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, across different sectors, including major projects like the construction of Solution Fun City.

In summary, Anambra State has successfully regained 10 oil wells previously credited to Delta State after the resolution of a long-standing boundary dispute between the two states.
