A significant chapter in Delta State’s traditional history was reopened as the Asaba and Ezhionum communities formally reunited after more than three centuries of separation, in an event filled with symbolism, cultural pride, and renewed brotherhood.
The historic reunion took place in Asaba Kingdom, where the Ezhie of Ezhionum Kingdom, located in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, His Royal Majesty, Comrade Evangelist R.C. Osanwuta (JP), led a high-powered delegation to their ancestral homeland.
They were warmly received by the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, SAN, OON, alongside chiefs, elders, and members of the Asaba community.Welcoming the Ezhionum delegation, Asagba Azinge described the reunion as a historic milestone and a deliberate step towards strengthening unity among Asaba people, both at home and in the diaspora.
He recalled the peace resolution between Ezeanyanwu and Ahaba at the beginning of his reign, explaining that subsequent consultations and historical findings confirmed that Asaba and Ezhionum share a common ancestral origin. The monarch stressed that the reunion underscores the age-old principle that “Nwanne Di Na Mba”, meaning brotherhood transcends boundaries.
He assured the visiting delegation that the Ezeugboma village of Umuezei quarters would be fully integrated into the affairs of Asaba Kingdom, reinforcing inclusion and shared identity. According to the Asagba, the reunion provides an opportunity to re-examine and properly document their shared history, while also setting a clear direction for future cooperation.

He therefore directed the Asaba History and Documentation Committee to formally capture the event and submit a comprehensive report before the end of March. As part of efforts to deepen cultural ties, Asagba Azinge extended invitations to the Ezhionum community to participate in major Asaba festivals, while also accepting reciprocal invitations to Ezhionum cultural celebrations.
Responding on behalf of his people, the Ezhie of Ezhionum, HRM Evangelist R.C. Osanwuta, expressed deep gratitude to God for the historic day and thanked the Asagba and the people of Asaba for the warm reception accorded his delegation. He particularly acknowledged the role of the Nna Agu in facilitating the reconnection and emphasized the importance of rebuilding and sustaining the relationship between both communities.
Symbolic gifts were exchanged during the ceremony to cement the renewed bond. The Secretary of the Ezhionum Development Association, Dr. Orin Emmanuel Ndudi, presented gifts to the Asagba of Asaba, while Obi Agbogidi Nduka Samuel Ogochukwu presented gifts to the Ezhie of Ezhionum. The colourful event was enlivened by rich cultural displays, including performances by the Otu Onye Weli Dance Band, Onye Zusia Nwa Aguba Dance Group, and the traditional Egwu Ota, reflecting the shared heritage of both communities.
The reunion marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation, unity, and collective development between Asaba and Ezhionum. Leaders from both sides reaffirmed their commitment to work together in preserving their cultural heritage and advancing the socio-economic progress of their people.
