ASUU Gives FG 4-Day Ultimatum on New Salary Structure

The National President of the Academic Union of Universities ASUU Professor Christopher Piwuna has given the Federal Government four days ultimatum starting from Thursday the 26th of March to implement the agreed new Salary structure for University academics.

Professor Piwuna gave the ultimatum during a Public Lecture organised by ASUU Sa’adu Zungur University SAZU Bauchi chapter.

The ASUU National President said the union and its members are tired of waiting for the government to pass into law and commence implementation of the 2026 budget, before the new salary structure would become a reality.

He condemned the agreement signed by President Bola Tinubu in London, the capital of the United Kingdom during his recent State visit particularly on the establishment of a branch of Coventry University in Nigeria, describing the step as an act of neocolonialism in the education sector.

Professor Piwuna said ASUU would resist the move arguing that it would further erode the value and relevance of Nigerian Universities.

The ASUU National President called on all local chapters of the union to always work in unison- being the leadership trademark of the association- to remain united and strong.

He stressed that the federal government must act swiftly and commence payment under the new salary arrangement which was approved after prolonged negotiations between both parties.

” We have issued a four day ultimatum from Thursday 26 March 2026 to the federal government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union” ASUU President asserted.

Professor Piwuna lamented that the federal government has consistently failed to honour several agreements in the past, a situation he said has led to repeated disputes and industrial actions.

He advised the federal government to collaborate with ASUU to improve the standard of Nigerian Universities to better serve the educational needs future generations.
