Teachers Decry Faulty TRCN Portal

Teachers across Nigeria have raised concerns over ongoing problems with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal, saying the challenges have forced many of them back to manual registration.

The online platform, introduced in September 2025 by the Minister of Education, Maruf Alausa, was designed to simplify teacher registration, licensing, and certificate processing across the country.

The project, led by TRCN Registrar Dr Ronke Soyombo, was part of wider efforts to improve standards and professionalism in the teaching sector.

However, several primary and secondary school teachers who spoke on Monday said the platform has not lived up to expectations, urging authorities to fix the issues quickly.

A primary school teacher in Abuja, Femi Daniels, described the process as stressful and unreliable. He said he spent several days trying to upload required documents but kept receiving error messages. He added that he was unable to obtain the registration form from a bank, which meant travelling long distances at extra cost just to complete the process.

Daniels also warned that the difficulties could encourage illegal practices, including the issuance of fake certificates.

Similarly, a secondary school teacher in Gombe, Sadiq Kehinde, questioned the effectiveness of the system, noting that it was meant to remove delays and allow teachers to register from their homes.

Another teacher in Abuja, who preferred not to be named, said the delays are already affecting career progress, including promotions and transfers, as many educators are unable to access their certificates.

Meanwhile, a coalition of education stakeholders said the portal has suffered repeated technical issues since January 2026, leaving thousands of teachers unable to use it.

The group noted that many teachers have now returned to manual registration at TRCN offices, bringing back the delays and paperwork the digital system was meant to eliminate.
