The Delta State Police Command has begun disciplinary proceedings against two officers seen in a viral video allegedly collecting money from a motorist with a Point of Sale (POS) machine at a police station in Asaba.
The incident, said to have taken place on January 13, 2026, involved officers from the ‘C’ Division in Asaba and has triggered widespread public anger over police misconduct.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Commissioner of Police for Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, strongly condemned the behavior, calling it disgraceful, unprofessional, and unworthy of members of the Nigeria Police Force.
He reaffirmed the directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, which clearly bans extortion and the use of POS machines or any electronic payment methods within police facilities. The officers involved Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim are currently facing an orderly room trial, and the Command has promised to make the outcome public.
CP Oyeniyi emphasized that no officer has the right to demand or accept money from the public under any circumstances, warning that extortion and abuse of power will not be tolerated. He also urged officers to maintain professionalism and respect citizens’ fundamental rights as outlined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), adding that the disciplinary action would serve as a warning to others.
The Command praised members of the public for bringing the incident to light and encouraged residents to report similar cases through its Complaint Response Unit. The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe.
