Bassey Beats Iwobi to Fulham’s Player of the Season Title

Premier League team Fulham has recognized Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as its Player of the Season for the 2024–25 league year.

The 25-year-old, who made his move to Fulham from Ajax during the summer of 2023, led the fan voting with 39.6 percent of the total votes, surpassing fellow Nigerian Alex Iwobi, who garnered 21.5 percent.

Left-back Antonee Robinson secured third place with 19.9 percent, while goalkeeper Bernd Leno (10.9 percent) and Saša Lukić (8.1 percent) completed the top five.

Bassey participated in 35 matches, playing a crucial part in assisting the club to achieve a record 54-point total, which earned them an 11th-place finish at the season’s conclusion.

Even with his remarkable performances, Bassey’s contributions were not sufficient to secure a European qualification spot for Fulham—the club’s main objective for the season.

The defender conveyed his appreciation to the fans and everyone who cast their votes, stating he felt privileged to be named Fulham’s Player of the Season.

He noted, “I want to thank God—without Him, I wouldn’t be where I am. Shout out to all my teammates, those who may not currently be at the Club but have supported me.

I also want to thank the coaching staff and the Manager for their trust and belief in me. I hope we can achieve great things next season, so thanks for your continued support, everyone.”

Bassey was a key player last season, logging a total of 3,074 minutes on the field. He was included in the starting lineup for 34 of his 35 matches over 38 games, only appearing as a substitute once.

His minutes played placed him fifth among all Premier League athletes in terms of match appearances.

Bassey scored two goals across all competitions—one in the Premier League during their 2–1 win against Nottingham Forest on February 15, and the other at Old Trafford, where he scored the opener in their notable Emirates FA Cup victory over Manchester United.
