Confusion trails death of mother, son in Asaba

A middle-aged woman, Mrs Ada-Ocha Idowu, and her son, on Monday, were found dead while two other sons were unconscious in their apartment at Umuagwu in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the victims were found dead in the morning while the two other sons were rushed to the St. Joseph Catholic Hospital, Asaba.

When the deceased’s family house was visited on Monday, the younger sister of the deceased woman, simply identified as Maureen, said the death of her sister was a mystery, claiming that she neither died of generator fumes nor noodles poison as was speculated in the community.

It was learnt that the older son and his cousin were receiving treatment in the hospital.

She said, “My sister was healthy and went to church on Sunday. When they came back, she cooked rice and stew. She had never eaten noodles before.

“The rumour that is making the rounds in the community that they died as a result of eating noodles or generator smoke is a lie.

“It is not generator fume, she had a lot of enemies in that house. When the two sons regain their consciousness, we will know what killed them.

“My son, who was also a victim but is now regaining himself, told me that my late sister did not eat the noodles.”

She said that her son narrated that when he woke up and saw her sister lying lifelessly, he began to pour her water, but suddenly, he couldn’t raise one of his legs and hands and eventually fell on the ground, only to see himself in the hospital.

Besides, she said the victims were responding to treatment, and she was waiting for them to recover fully to ascertain what killed her sister and the last child.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, stated that the information available to them was that the victims died as a result of generator fume.

“If it’s the issue of the mother and her son’s death, the information available to us was generator fume.

“If they are suspecting foul play, they should let the police know and an autopsy will be conducted.”
