Dafinone Ignites Cultural Revival with Second Edition of Urhobo Language Competition

In a continued commitment to celebrating and preserving the Urhobo language and culture, the respected Senator for Delta Central, Chief Ede Dafinone, has announced his sponsorship of the 2025 Urhobo Language Competition, now in its second edition. This year’s event will be held in honor of the late Senator Pius Akpor Ewherido, who originally started the competition.

Senator Dafinone explained that the competition’s goal is to encourage young people to actively engage with and keep the Urhobo language alive, both in writing and speaking. He stressed that the language is an essential part of Urhobo identity and should never be allowed to disappear.

The Senator shared the announcement in an official statement to the press on Saturday, He revealed that the competition welcomes all Urhobo-speaking students, from Primary 1 pupils up to university students in their 500-level year. This broad eligibility is designed to encourage involvement from a wide range of ages and educational stages.

“I am honoured to sponsor the second edition of the Urhobo Language Competition this year, held in memory of the late Distinguished Senator Pius Ewherido,” Dafinone stated. “This initiative is designed to inspire the younger generation to embrace, preserve, and sustain the Urhobo language through active participation in both writing and speech.”

It’s important to highlight that the Urhobo Language Competition was originally launched in 2012 by the late Senator Pius Akpor Ewherido, as part of his commitment to encouraging the younger generation to embrace and promote the Urhobo language.

Senator Dafinone has brought the competition back to life and taken on its sponsorship, showing a fresh dedication to preserving culture and involving young people. His support has revitalized the event, helping to keep Senator Ewherido’s legacy alive and thriving.
