In a bid to protect tenants from exploitation and ensure fair returns for landlords, the Delta State House of Assembly Joint Committee on Housing, Women Affairs and Girl Child Entrepreneurship, Humanitarian Support Services, and Urban Renewal has presented its report on the Delta State Landlord and Tenant Bill.
Presenting the report during plenary on Tuesday, March 10 2026, the Chairman of the Joint Committee, Honourable Bridget Anyafulu, said the committee carried out detailed legislative scrutiny and organised a public hearing where relevant stakeholders made contributions that guided the committee’s recommendations.

She said the bill, when passed into law, will address the rising cost of housing, particularly in urban areas, ensure tenants are not exploited and also protect the investment of Landlords.
The House presided over by the Speaker, Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, received and adopted the report following a motion moved by the Leader of the House, Honourable Emeka Nwaobi.
Speaker Guwor deferred further consideration of the bill to April 7, when it will be taken at the Committee of the Whole.
The proposed legislation seeks to repeal the Rent Control and Recovery of Residential Premises Law of 1977 and introduce a new framework that fits into modern tenancy agreements.
