Delta Assembly urges stricter enforcement of Anti-Open Grazing Law

The Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Legislative Compliance has directed the 25 local government council chairmen to enforce the Anti-Open Grazing Law enacted by the 7th Assembly.

During an interactive session, Deputy Speaker and Committee Chairman, Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo, stressed the importance of enforcing the law fairly, noting that cattle rearing now cuts across tribes. He called for sensitization and the formation of committees for proper enforcement.

The session follows reports of poor compliance from various councils. Committee members, including Rt. Hon. Emeka Nwaobi and Hon. Perkins Umukoro, urged the chairmen to document challenges for possible amendments while prioritizing immediate action to protect lives and ensure food security.

Several council chairmen, including Hon. Jaro Egbo (Ughellli North) and Hon. Possible Ajede (Ukwani), expressed readiness to implement the law but pointed out areas needing review.

The Legislative Compliance Committee distributed copies of the law for further sensitization among traditional rulers, police, and community leaders.
