Delta Government Refutes Gbemre’s Allegations, Reiterates Oborevwori’s Commitment to Unity

The Delta State Government has strongly denied claims by Mr. Zik Gbemre, who identified himself as coordinator of the Niger Delta Peace Coalition (NDPC), alleging that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was fueling ethnic tensions in Warri and politicizing community matters.

In a statement released on Sunday, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads and Public Communication), Mr. Charles Aniagwu, described the allegations as unfounded and misleading, stressing that they do not reflect the governor’s track record of inclusiveness and peace-building.

“From the onset of his administration, Governor Oborevwori has consistently emphasized the importance of harmony among Delta’s diverse ethnic groups, with special attention to Warri’s complex cultural landscape,” Aniagwu noted.

According to the government, the governor has continuously engaged traditional leaders, community representatives, and stakeholders to foster dialogue and prevent any recurrence of ethnic strife. Aniagwu reaffirmed that at no point has Governor Oborevwori endorsed actions that could be seen as divisive or supportive of ethnic dominance.

He further disclosed that security agencies have been mandated to thoroughly investigate recent disturbances in Warri, assuring that perpetrators of vandalism or provocation will face justice.

“It is inaccurate to portray the governor as issuing veiled threats or politicizing sensitive matters. On the contrary, he has acted as a bridge-builder and neutral arbiter, urging restraint and mutual respect across all communities,” Aniagwu stated.

The government also assured that all cultural festivals and community activities in Delta would continue under strict adherence to law, order, and respect for traditions, irrespective of ethnic affiliation.

Aniagwu called on civil society, youth groups, and opinion leaders to shun inflammatory rhetoric and partner with government in strengthening peace and development.

“Governor Oborevwori is a governor for all Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Isoko, Anioma, and others and will remain focused on promoting unity and progress across Delta State,” he affirmed.
