The Delta State Government has started a new dress code for public workers to promote proper behavior, order, and professionalism in the workplace.
In a notice signed by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. M. M. Awuse, on behalf of the Head of Service, the government shared its worries about more people dressing in a way that is not appropriate. They made it clear that everyone must follow the new dress rules carefully moving forward.
This notice, dated September 9, 2025, says that “No officer should appear in the office or anywhere in their official role dressed in a way that is not proper or modest.”
Guidelines for Male Officers
The new rules say that all male officers with Salary Grade Level (SGL) 13 and above must wear full suits.
Those with SGL 07 to 12 should wear trousers with shirts and ties, unless they are administrative officers, who must wear suits all the time. Officers with SGL 01 to 06 should wear trousers and shirts, while uniformed staff like drivers and plant operators must wear their official uniforms.
Traditional clothing is allowed only on Fridays and special events.
Approved options include senator-style outfits or native shirts with matching trousers and traditional caps. However, wearing Resource Control or Papas caps and having bushy beards is not allowed.
Guidelines for Female Officers
Female officers with SGL 13 and above should dress in trouser suits, skirt suits, or corporate gowns that go below the knee.
Any trousers worn must be part of a full suit. Those with SGL 07 to 12 can wear flowing gowns or skirts below the knee with blouses that cover the arms. Officers with SGL 01 to 06 should also wear gowns with sleeves or skirts and blouses that follow the same standard.
Traditional clothes are allowed on Fridays and special events, like buba and wrapper, skirts with blouses, or African gowns with suitable sleeves. Female officers are not allowed to show cleavage or wear long false lashes, dyed hair, or long nails.
The notice told all department heads to make sure the new dress code is followed strictly. It also said that anyone found not following the dress code should be sent home to change right away or face more serious consequences.
