Delta govt clears salary arrears of Delta Queens FC players, releases funds to Warri Wolves FC

Delta State Government has approved the release of funds for the payment of the 4 months arrears of salary and bonuses owed players of Delta Queens Football Club.

Also approved is the release of funds to Warri Wolves Football Club, popularly called the Seasiders.

The Chairman, Delta State Sports Commission, (DSSC), Mr Onoriode Oborevwori, who announced the approvals in a statement in Asaba, said it was part of efforts to reposition the Clubs for better performance.

Mr. Oborevwori noted that Delta Queens was a foremost Nigerian Women’s Football Team with an impressive showing in the Nigerian Women Premier League, adding that the Club made the state proud by winning several titles.

He said Warri Wolves FC once maintained a good record in Nigerian football, which led to its promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in 2009, but was later relegated to the Nigerian National League (NNL) in the 2020-2021 football season.

The Board Chairman expressed the hope that the good intentions of the state government for the Clubs would not only motivate the players to maintain and possibly surpass their past records, but also come tops on the League tables.

Speaking on the development, the 1st member of the Commission and ex-international footballer, Sam Sodje, commended the State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, for his interest in repositioning the state-owned Football Club.

Sam Sodje said the settlement of the salary arrears of the players was an indication that the Governor meant well for the new Board, as it had set the Commission on the path to success in delivery of its mandate .

The former Super Eagles centre-back defender pointed out that the Board, with its young and energetic Chairman and members, would focus on improving the welfare of athletes and upgrade of sporting facilities across the state, with a view to ensuring that Delta remained a state to beat in Nigerian sports and other competitions.
