The Delta State Government has denounced the vandalism of the newly resurfaced Okpanam Road after a whistleblower video revealed individuals digging into the road surface to erect canopies for a social function.
In a swift response, the Commissioner for Works, Comrade Reuben Izeze, visited the site on the instruction of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. Izeze was accompanied by the Divisional Police Officer and other government officials to inspect the extent of damage and initiate immediate investigative actions.
According to the Ministry, several persons were arrested at the scene but later granted bail pending further inquiries.
Izeze described the act as “reckless and unacceptable,” stressing that government investments in road infrastructure must be protected.
He emphasized that deliberate damage to public assets undermines development efforts and wastes taxpayers’ money. The Commissioner confirmed that a comprehensive report would be forwarded to the Governor, and those found culpable will face prosecution under relevant laws.
The state government also issued a broader warning to residents, urging them to safeguard public infrastructure and report any acts of vandalism through the established whistleblower channels.
According to the Works Ministry, strict enforcement measures will continue as part of the administration’s commitment to preserving road quality and ensuring long-term durability.
Authorities reiterated that Delta’s infrastructure renewal drive depends on community cooperation and respect for public property, cautioning that future violations will attract firm legal action.
