The Delta State Government has firmly denounced the alleged harassment and assault of women during the recent Ozoro Festival, describing the acts as inhumane and completely unacceptable.
In a statement released on Friday, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, expressed serious concern over reports that some women were harassed and, in some instances, sexually assaulted under the cover of festival activities.
He stated that such actions are intolerable and have no place in any civilised society. Aniagwu stressed that cultural events must never be used as an excuse for criminal behaviour, adding that the government will not condone any form of abuse or violation of women’s rights and dignity.
He also called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to promptly investigate the incidents and ensure those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
According to him, no individual or group should be allowed to exploit a cultural celebration as a shield for carrying out criminal acts, urging authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
