A 54-year-old man has been apprehended by the Delta State Police Command following allegations of sexually abusing his three daughters over seven years, a case that came to light due to a proactive school outreach program.
The victims, now aged 13, 15, and 24, were subjected to repeated abuse, with the eldest daughter enduring the ordeal since she was 12.
The breakthrough occurred during an enlightenment initiative led by CSP Temi Agbede Zuokumor, the Divisional Police Officer of the Ugborikoko Division.
One of the younger daughters confided in a friend after the outreach, which empowered her to speak out about the abuse, ultimately leading to the father’s arrest.
SP Bright Edafe, the Command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, highlighting the critical role of community engagement in uncovering such heinous crimes.Investigations reveal that the suspect admitted to the abuse without remorse, attributing his actions to an unspecified “evil urge.”
The daughters are currently under medical care and receiving counseling to address the trauma.
Authorities have assured that the case will be pursued vigorously, with charges expected under Delta State’s stringent sexual-offense laws.
This incident underscores the pervasive issue of child sexual abuse in Nigeria, where UNICEF reports indicate that six out of ten children experience some form of violence before adulthood.
The case also exemplifies the potential impact of educational interventions in breaking the silence around familial abuse, prompting calls for expanded national efforts to protect vulnerable minors.
The Delta State Police Command remains committed to ensuring justice and supporting the victims’ recovery.
