The National Population Commission (NPC) has introduced the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (eCRVS) in Delta State, rolling out a digital platform aimed at improving how vital data and statistics are collected and managed. Speaking at a press briefing in Asaba, Delta Federal Commissioner Mrs. Blessyn Brume-Ataguba said the state launch follows the national unveiling by Bola Tinubu in November 2023. She noted that the initiative also reflects the 2022 resolution by African ministers to modernise civil registration systems in line with the UN Legal Identity Agenda.
Brume-Ataguba explained that the system, developed in collaboration with UNICEF, marks a decisive move away from paper records to a fully digital process that meets global standards. According to her, the eCRVS will transform the way births and deaths are documented and analysed across the country, producing more reliable data for planning and strengthening civil registration systems to support national growth and the Sustainable Development Goals.
She added that launching the platform at the state level is important for raising awareness among the media and the public, assuring that trained ICT personnel are on hand to provide technical support. The commissioner urged stakeholders to work closely with the commission, expressing confidence that the system will significantly improve the registration of vital events and build a stronger foundation for managing civil statistics, with the current rollout phase expected to wrap up in March.
Also speaking, NPC State Director Mrs. Jane Odigwe called on the Delta State Government to partner with the commission and encouraged parents to register their children. She highlighted that a birth certificate is critical for accessing education and healthcare services, adding that proper registration safeguards a child’s identity and ensures they can fully participate in Nigeria’s future development.
