Abuse of drugs by youths has become a growing menace in the society. How to fight this challenge was the focus of youths of Arhavwarien Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government as they garthered.
According to recent statements from NAFDAC and NDLEA about 14.4 million Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 64 are involved in drug abuse.
The report listed some hard drugs and substances most frequently abused by Nigerian youths to include Cannabis, popularly called “Igboh” with over 10.6 million users; as it remains the most widely used illicit substance.
Opioids such asTramadol & Codine are frequently abused via prescription of cough syrups and high-dosage pills as well as increasing use of Synthetic Drugs like Methamphetamine and “Loud” which is a high-potency cannabis strain.
The report also noted that younger adolescents and children in vulnerable urban areas also abuse Inhalants/Solvents such as glue and petrol.
Various speakers at the 2026 New Year celebration of the youths of Arhavwarien Kingdom including Comr Innocent Ejanyire, Pastor Solomon Matsola and Pastor Emmanuel Ilori likened drug abuse to an enemy who disguised as a friend to their users.

For their parts, Comr Akpovi Enimu and Engr Erere Eruayephiare who is the President of Brighter Star, said drug abuse by youths has destroyed many young lives, homes and having a toll on the Nation’s economy.
Comrade Innocent Eshadega who is President of the Young Stars who facilitated the gathering, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, John Matsola, its Secretary, Richard Ovuosharerire, and Public Relations Officer, Oyibo Opuama said that the effort was to curb the rising cases of drug abuse and consumption of illicit drugs in the state particularly the kingdom.
The youths of Arhavwarien Kingdom however appealed to Governor Oborevwori to connect the area to other parts of the State by constructing a bridge across the Arhavwarien river.
