The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed reports suggesting that it has abandoned the investigation into alleged corruption involving former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, following his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The commission stated that the investigation is still ongoing and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that justice is served, regardless of any individual’s political affiliation.
The clarification was issued by EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, during a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters to mark his second year in office.
Speaking on the Chairman’s behalf, the Director of Legal and Prosecution, Sylvanus Tahir (SAN), addressed public concerns that politicians who join the ruling party are given special protection, insisting that the EFCC’s work remains impartial and guided by evidence.
Tahir stressed that the EFCC operates with complete independence and without political interference, noting that no individual is exempt from investigation or prosecution on the basis of political ties.
Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and his successor, Sheriff Oborevwori, both defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in April 2025, just months after Okowa was reportedly arrested by the EFCC in November 2024 over allegations of diverting ₦1.3 trillion in oil derivation funds a case that drew widespread public criticism and allegations of a possible cover-up.
Tahir further explained that the commission prefers to complete thorough investigations before initiating legal action, especially in high-profile cases, to ensure that prosecutions are well-grounded and can stand up in court.
Responding to concerns over the absence of convictions against high-profile individuals, Tahir emphasized that all cases are treated with equal seriousness.
He acknowledged the challenges involved in investigating politically exposed persons, noting, “Take a governor who has managed a state and its resources for eight years any allegations stemming from their tenure cannot be rushed; such investigations naturally take time.”
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to tackling all corruption cases with the same level of diligence and thoroughness.
