Fake Eye Doctor Arrested for Allegedly Defrauding Elderly Residents

A man identified as Abass Abubakar has been taken into custody for allegedly impersonating an eye specialist and scamming residents of the Ekiugbo community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, with elderly people said to be the main targets.

The arrest took place on Wednesday, during an operation led by the Chairman of Ughelli North Council, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, after several complaints were raised by concerned members of the community.

According to a statement from the chairman, Abubakar, who is reportedly from Lafia in Nasarawa State, operated under the name Al-Arab Eye Clinic while carrying out his activities from Benin City.

He allegedly claimed to treat eye conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma, charging patients between N300,000 and N500,000 for the supposed treatments.

Authorities also revealed that the eye drops given to patients, which were presented as medicated solutions, were later suspected to be nothing more than ordinary water.
